A: First of all, could you please share with us what made you decide to take a part in “THE SEASON”?

L: First of all, obviously the script and the cast. And just being in Hong Kong and shooting in a different place is what draw me to the project. I mean, look at the city, right? So, just being here in Hong Kong was a new challenge for me because I’ve never done anything outside of Korea, and in English as well. So, I wanted to challenge myself and open my arms to new opportunities. To make sure that I progress, as an actor and as a person. I think being in a place that is not too comfortable and new can make you develop as an actor.

A: Could you tell us a bit about your character in “THE SEASON”? To get into character, what kind of preparation did you do before shooting started?

L: I play Jon Kim in “THE SEASON”. He’s a quiet, unpredictable, and very observing person. He’s that type of person who would step into the room and make everything uneasy. He’s sort of like a shadow of the family. He’s always around them but he’s very unseen.

And to prepare for the role, I just kept on reading the script. I went through the lines. As much as you read, you find new things from the script. Especially for this one, the script was in English, so I had to make sure that I understood what was going on. Those are the basic things I would always do to prepare for a role.

A: Which actors did you work closely with while filming “THE SEASON”?

L: I worked very closely with Toby Stevens. He played Mr. Hext in “THE SEASON”. Also, Jessie Mei Li who played Cola. We were always on set together every scene because obviously I’m the “fixer” of the Hext family. I’ve been chasing around Cola to make sure she doesn’t cause any trouble. I don’t want to spoil anything but you’ll see what I mean by then.

If you see Toby Stevens on screen, he’s a very serious actor, right? But off the camera, he’s a very funny person! He made me laugh all the time. Just to make sure everything on set was calm and fun. He made everyone feel comfortable. And same with Jessie. She had a great energy on and off the set. We had a great time chatting and getting to know each other. Also, as an actor, there’s a lot to learn from her. She could switch her energy on and off easily. She’s such a pro! I learnt a lot from both of them!

A: How was the interaction between you and the director? Did they explain the reason they wanted you to be in “THE SEASON”?

L: It was a coincidence. It’s a long story. I was in Hong Kong for the Hong Kong Marathon. The director and the showrunner were in Hong Kong at the time. We had a little chat at the coffee shop about the story and the character. A few days later, they were like, “You are Jon Kim!” They wanted me as Jon Kim. The showrunner told me that, “There isn’t anyone that can be more Jon Kim.” I was very thankful to be chosen.

We had a great interaction on set. Both of them really listened to my ideas. They gave me the opportunity to be very creative. They were opened to ideas. We made some corrections on set, in terms of lines and what we wanted to do. We played around to make the Jon Kim character more menacing and more… you know, full of character.

A: How was your experience spending time with Hong Kong production crew? What was the biggest difference compared to filming in Korea?

L: Filming in Korea and Hong Kong are very similar. We were both working and creating something. Everyone’s gathered around us with their heads together and with ideas. We were just making something fun.

I think it’s a little different between the actors. Both Hong Kong production and Korea production have that respectful way of treating each other. But at the same time, here it feels like we had more fun. Between the crew and the cast, we had a lot of fun. I think it was more playful, I would say.

A: Given your background studying in Canada, do you feel that experience helped you adapt more easily to working in a different cultural environment?

L: Yes, of course. First of all, I can speak the language, so that helped a lot. And understanding the Western culture and also the Asian art culture is a big part of adapting and accepting a different culture, right? Because a lot of the casts from the show are from different parts of the world who are either mixed-race or a Chinese person growing up in the U.S. or in the U.K. For myself, I grew up in Canada, so I know both sides of the world very well. That really helped us to interact better. I think as human beings and as actors, we understood each other better and appreciated the culture that we share. I think that is why “THE SEASON” on set was very special for us.

A: We all know that you are a huge sports and fitness enthusiast, and you recently participated in Season 2 of “Physical: 100”. Do you feel your physical strength gave you any advantage while filming “THE SEASON” or any other drama and movies?

L: Not directly. You know, it’s not very often to see me in a top list of movies or series, recently at least. I think just being physically fit and having that energy help in an indirect way, I guess. Action films require the physical ability. In that case, it would help a lot. But I think it’s two different categories. I put fitness on one side, and I put acting on the other side. If they happen to collide and help each other, then that’s great.

A: According to my research, one of the challenges you faced when starting out as an actor was being told to change your weight and appearance. But looking at how far you’ve come today, what words of encouragement do you have for people struggling with body image or low self-esteem?

L: I mean, I can’t just force people to be like, “Oh, just love yourself. You’re fine!” I wouldn’t say that. If there’s a problem, I think fitness is very important. Eating healthy, sleeping well, being active are very important. I can’t just tell people that everything’s okay, right? I think you need to put a lot of effort and dedication into being fit. You don’t have to be like a sculpture. But at least, you know, in a healthy way. I think you should take care of your body very well. It’s not about the result. Just going to the gym every day or stepping outside the door and run for 2 or 3 kilometers. I think it’s the process that gives you the self-esteem instead of making your body in a certain way. As you get the habit of being active and being aware of your body or your looks, I think the self-esteem will gradually come to you. So yeah, just love yourself!
