1. What was the most unforgettable moment when you visited Hong Kong last time?

Ado: It’s the crowd. Because the yelling and the screaming from the crowd was so welcoming. We had been waiting for this moment for so long, so it really hit me in the heart and made me so happy. After each of every song, there was so much energy coming from the crowd, which in turn energized me! Also, the venue I got to perform was very big. I had such incredibly fun memories of Hong Kong.

2. How do you feel about the coming “Hibana” concert in HK? Any surprise to HK fans?

Ado: I am really looking forward to going back to Hong Kong again. The set list is different from Japan, so everybody overseas including Hong Kong will get to enjoy a different set list.

3. Any plans or food you want to try in HK?

Ado: Last time I really had no time to do sightseeing, unfortunately. But I would really like to take time to see the city more. Actually, on Japanese TV, they do programs for Japanese celebrities go and visit Hong Kong, they would have sort of the spiritual experiences, or they go to tea rooms trying different types of tea with spices or something healthy. I definitely like to take time and see the city and try some tea as well. Also, I am a Disney fan, so I love to go to Disneyland in Hong Kong! But last time, again, not much time for that, so I remember buying lots of headbands at the Disney store in Hong Kong.

4. Ado has collaborated with American rock band Imagine Dragons on the remix of their song “Take Me to the Beach” in December last year. Shall you share some memorable moments in this collaboration?
去年 12 月 Ado 有機會與美國著名搖滾樂隊 Imagine Dragons 合作〈Take Me to the Beach〉Remix 版,可以分享當中的難忘回憶嗎?

Ado: I’ve always loved Imagine Dragons, so to have them came to me and asked for collaboration for something, I was like “Really? What?!”; it filled me with surprise. For my part, they said I could sing in Japanese, so I thought it would be interesting if we could do something like trading punches with them in the lyrics. That was the image I had while I was recording. The part where I sing together with Imagine Dragons, that part I had to sing in English. English pronunciation could be quite difficult. That was a bit of challenge, but it seems like both of our fan bases really like the song!

5. A few years ago, Ado said she wanted to learn English, and last year you went to the U.S. for a while and also shared the experience of ordering food in English. How’s everything going? How’s the progress of learning English?

Ado: I’ve been speaking Japanese from a very young age. That’s how my speech pattern in Japanese has developed. To start a new language from now is quite difficult. In time, Japanese and English sort of mixed together. The grammar and pronunciation are very different. At times it didn’t go as well as I thought it might. However, to be able to experience a new culture, and to speak with people living abroad, was a great experience for me. I tried to learn English in my private time. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to do that enough, but I would like to give it more time in the future.

6. Since you’ve brought such an influence in VOCALOID, can you tell us more about the power of VOCALOID? Based on your observation, did it bring any impact on human or society in some specific ways?

Ado: For example, if VOCALOID didn’t exist, I wouldn’t be here speaking with you today. And I don’t think I would have been singing either, so that had a huge impact on my life. However, VOCALOID themselves don’t have intent. It’s human being put intent into VOCALOID music. I think VOCALOID has helped create a more colorful culture in Japan. It also empowers Japanese elementary or middle school students to get through the day or the week. It’s sort of a support for some people. I think VOCALOID brings people together. In that sense, it provides the richness in culture.

7. For Ado’s new album “Ado’s Best Adobum”, is there any reason for this listening order? Is there a recommended listening order for fans or a certain mood you hope people will listen?

Ado: The album is divided into Disc 1 and Disc 2. For example, Disc 1 features more of my career from the beginning. Disc 2 starts with “Shoka”, and it ends with “Sakura Biyori and Time Machine”. Disc 2 features more of my recent self. I suppose you can listen to the album to get an idea of my entire career by listening to the tracks listed, or if there are songs that you don’t know, you can dive right in, and listen to those first.

8. Looking back on the past 5 years, were there any new findings about the 5 years of your career? Do you see this as a career milestone or just a way to reach more fans?

Ado: Looking back on the past 5 years went by like a flash, I was given the opportunity to have so many different experiences, from my first show to having artistes that I really admire wrote a song for me, I was also able to perform on different stages, I had been on world tour, I’ve also written my own songs, they were all milestones, so to speak, so many different incredible experiences as well. I suppose in order to bring those experiences together, this album was necessary in that way. Of course, my fans probably know most of these songs, but perhaps, whether they are Japanese or non-Japanese, people up there who know Ado by name, or don’t know Ado at all; hopefully, this album will serve as a way to get to know me better.
